Fruits and seeds

Learning objectives

  • To define “fruit” in the botanical sense.
  • To identify and count the seeds of certain fruits.
  • To teach the importance of the dissemination of seeds.

The botanical idea of “fruit” differs from that used in everyday language.  Fruits are all derived from the transformation of one or more parts of the flower. They all contain one or more seeds. Once released into the environment,  they give birth to new plants if the conditions are favorable for germination.

Nature provides a great diversity of fruits, only some of which are edible.
