Substances versus mixtures

Learning objectives

  • To teach a basic classification of matter
  • To review certain properties of matter: state, composition, atoms, molecules, pure substances, mixtures, solutions

In our everyday lives we use materials of different natures or different appearances. These materials can be classified into two categories;

  • Pure substances: made  up of a single component (a single type of atom or a single type of molecule)
  • Mixtures: made up of several components

Within the category of mixtures, it is possible  to distinguish between  homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.

Place the items presented in the correct category.
