Enumerating sets

Learning objectives

  • To enumerate small sets of items.
  • To order before counting.
  • To compose and decompose numbers.
  • To introduce addition and multiplication.

Counting a collection means listing all of its objects without forgetting any and without counting any of them twice.

A number is an abstract concept that represents a quantity. It is independent of the nature of the items being counted and the order in which they are counted.

Numbers are written using ten symbols, called digits (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).

You can count by identifying objects one by one or by grouping them into packages.

This animation introduces these concepts:

  • a random collection of objects,
  • an individual tally of objects (moving an object to memorize it, setting up a separation procedure),
  • creating sets (grouping objects and circling packages),
  • identifying each set by its number label.
