Weight / Mass on Earth

Learning objectives

  • To make the distinction between weight (a force intensity in N) and mass (a fundamental property in Kg).

Weight and mass are linked by a relationship of proportionality.

Weight is a force, expressed in Newtons (N), while mass is a property of matter expressed in kilograms (kg). Weight depends on location. It is not the same on Earth as it is on the Moon. Mass is a measure of the quantity of matter in an object. It is the same at any point in space.
